Which fabrics can you steam with the TS Refine garment steamer?Updated 12 days ago
Not every fabric reacts to steam in the same way. Below you can read which fabrics you can use the TS Refine garment steamer on, and which fabrics call for extra care. This way you remove wrinkles from your clothes without risk of damaging the fabric.
Which fabrics can you steam?
Most fabrics can be steamed, but not all of them. Use the table below as a guideline.
| Category | Materials |
|---|---|
Generally suitable | Cotton, linen, wool, denim, synthetic fibres, polyester, viscose and silk. Always check the care label first. |
Use with care or not recommended | Velvet, suede, leather and PU leather (faux leather). |
Unsure about a fabric? Check the care label and test the garment steamer on a small, inconspicuous area first. Some fabrics must not be steamed, while others are only suitable for low temperatures or a low steam output.
How to go about it
A quick check beforehand avoids surprises.
- 1. Read the care label
- Check the care label to see whether the garment can be steamed. If the label advises against steaming, it's best to skip it.
- 2. No care label? Test first
- Assess the fabric and test the garment steamer on a small, inconspicuous area, for example on the inside of a hem, before you steam the whole garment.
- 3. Choose the right steam mode
- Use Steam Mode I
for light or delicate fabrics and Steam Mode II
for thicker, heavier or heavily wrinkled fabrics. Unsure? Start in Steam Mode I
, the lower steam output.
- 4. Move steadily over the fabric
- Gently place the aluminium steam plate against the fabric and move it slowly, preferably from top to bottom.
Good to know: This list is a guideline, not a guarantee that a fabric is suitable for steaming. Techweise cannot guarantee that steaming is safe for every fabric. That's why using it on a specific material is always your own judgement.
Also handy for household textiles
You can also use the TS Refine on curtains, bedding, tablecloths, cushions and upholstery, as long as the material is suitable for steam and water.
Important things to remember
- Never steam clothing while wearing it The steam and the metal steam plate get hot and can cause burns. Always steam clothing while it's hanging on a hanger or lying flat.
- Steaming flat? Use Steam Mode I or II only If you lay a garment or fabric flat, use only Steam Mode I
or II
, without suction mode
.
- Point the steam away from your body Always keep the steam and the steam plate away from your body and hands to prevent burns.
